Competitions abound at Duke's OceanFest

Advertiser Staff

Canoe paddling, surfing, swimming and beach volleyball are just some of the sports that will be featured during the Duke's OceanFest the next two weekends.

The OceanFest has been held every year since 2001 to honor the birthdate of Duke Kahanamoku (Aug. 24, 1890).

This year, 10 athletic events are on the schedule:

  • The Duke Kahanamoku Long Distance Race for men's canoe teams is set for Sunday. The 24-mile race will start at Kailua Beach and finish at Duke Kahanamoku Beach, Waikiki.

Lanikai, which is the host club for the race, won it last year in 2 hours, 53 minutes, 8 seconds.

  • The Roxy Jam Honolulu women's professional longboard surfing contest will run Aug. 23 to 25 at Kuhio Beach, Waikiki.

It is the first women's longboarding contest sanctioned by the Association of Surfing Professionals to be staged in Hawai'i. Many of the world's top female longboard surfers are expected to enter.

  • The World Title of Tandem Surfing will run Aug. 22 to 25 at Kuhio Beach, Waikiki.

Makaha's Brian Keaulana and Kathy Terada are the defending world champions.

  • The Hawaiian Airlines Duke's Legends Surf Classic will run Aug. 22 to 25 at Kuhio Beach, Waikiki. Many of Hawai'i's former top professionals are expected to participate.

  • The Rigger's 4-person Invitational Volleyball Tournament will run Aug. 25 at Waikiki Beach (at the end of Kapahulu Avenue).

  • The C4 Waterman Stand Up surfing contest will run Aug. 22 and 25 at Kuhio Beach, Waikiki.

Stand-up paddle surfing is the latest craze in ocean sports, and many of Hawai'i's top watermen are participating.

  • The Hawai'i Paddleboard Championship will run Aug. 25. The 10-mile course will start at Maunalua Bay and finish at Kuhio Beach, Waikiki.

  • The Duke's Waikiki Ocean Mile Swim will take place Aug. 25 in front of the Duke's Waikiki restaurant.

  • The Pacific Beach Hotel Surf Polo Tournament will run Aug. 25 at Waikiki Beach (at the end of Kapahulu Avenue).

  • The Outrigger Hotels Waterman Challenge will run Aug. 26 on the beach fronting the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach hotel.
