Soccer: U.S. striker McBride out with knee injury

Associated Press

LONDON — U.S. striker Brian McBride dislocated his left kneecap while scoring for Fulham on Saturday and will be sidelined several months.

The 35-year-old McBride slipped in the 16th minute while putting Fulham ahead 1-0 against visiting Middlesbrough. Fulham went on to win the Premier League game 2-1.

McBride retired from international play with the United States last year. He is Fulham's captain and was the team's leading scorer last season with nine Premier League goals.

He was accompanied in the ambulance to a hospital by teammate Hameur Bouazza, who dislocated his right shoulder. In both injuries, there was minimal contact.

"Brian scored and dislocated his kneecap in the doing of it with no contact whatsoever," said Fulham manager Lawrie Sanchez, whose team has won one of its opening three games this season. "We were dominating the game at that stage. Then Hameur, with an innocuous challenge to dislocate his shoulder."
