Tennis: Henin reaches final at Rogers Cup

Associated Press

TORONTO -- Qualifier Yan Zi's surprising run at the Rogers Cup is over.

The 22-year-old from China lost 6-3, 6-0 today to top-ranked Justine Henin in the semifinals at the Rexall Center.

Yan, ranked 169th, was the first qualifier to reach the semifinals at the tournament in 11 years.

Henin's powerful serve and strong groundstrokes were too much for Yan, who eliminated defending champion Ana Ivanovic and Marion Bartoli along the way.

The Belgian star will try for her sixth win this season against either second-seeded Jelena Jankovic or Tatiana Golovin.

Yan, who uses a two-handed forehand, tried to keep the pressure on Henin early. At times, she worked the 25-year-old from corner to corner on the baseline and mixed in some backhand slices to keep her off-balance. The technique was effective in the first few games, and Yan broke Henin's serve to pull even at 3-3.

But from there, Henin appeared to find another gear and took advantage of several unforced errors, wrapping up the victory in a tidy 71 minutes.

Henin won the event in 2003 and lost in the 2005 final
