Swimming: Phelps withdraws from Japan meet

TOKYO — Michael Phelps, who won seven gold medals at this year's world swimming championships, will not take part in an upcoming international swim meet in Japan.Phelps was not on the latest list of American swimmers taking part in the Aug. 21-24 event at Chiba International Swimming Center, organizers said today. He had originally been scheduled to swim in the 100-meter butterfly and 200-meter individual medley.
Organizers did not disclose the reason for his withdrawal.
