State to halt roadwork to help ease back to school jam
Advertiser Staff
HONOLULUThe state Department of Transportation (DOT) advises Oahu motorists that most roadwork on state highways will be postponed from Monday, Aug. 20, through Monday, Sept. 3, as part of the DOT's "Beat The School Jam" campaign.
Nearly 60,000 University of Hawaii, community college and private school students will begin their fall semester beginning Monday, Aug. 20, increasing daytime traffic on Oahu's roadways. The DOT's "Beat The School Jam" campaign will postpone most state highway construction projects for two weeks to help alleviate the increased traffic congestion.
Road construction-related lane closures will not be scheduled during daylight hours on the following state roads:
i H-1 Freeway from Paiwa Interchange to Kahala Mall
i Kalanianaole Highway from Kahala Mall to Lunalilo Home Road
i Kamehameha Highway from Acacia Road to Valkenburg Street
i Kamehameha Highway from Kaneohe to Kahuku
i Nimitz Highway/Ala Moana Boulevard from Valkenburg Street to Kalakaua Avenue
i Kalihi Street/Likelike Highway from Nimitz Highway to Kamehameha Highway
i Pali Highway/Kalanianaole Highway/Kailua Road from Vineyard Boulevard to Kailua Town
i Vineyard Boulevard from Palama Street to Punchbowl Street
i Moanalua Freeway
i Kahekili Highway
Nighttime roadwork will still be allowed on these roads during this two-week period. Daytime roadwork that does not require lane closures (e.g. shoulder lane maintenance or landscaping work) may also be scheduled.
Motorists are advised to adjust their travel times and to leave earlier or later to avoid peak travel periods.
