O'ahu's largest fire in recent memory is 100 percent contained today. At its peak, the Honolulu Fire Department used more than one-third of its manpower to battle the 7,000-acre blaze in Waialua.

Firefighters are still battling hot spots in mountainous areas of the Waialua flank of the Wai'anae range. The fire began Aug. 12 near the University of Hawai'i Experimental Farm near Kaukohahua Road. Residents were evacuated, and many homes were covered in soot.

Mayor Mufi Hannemann said today that the city has applied for, and was recently granted federal Emergency Management Agency money to help cover the cost of overtime and equipment used and repairs during the seven days of fire fighting.

At one point, one-third of the on-duty manpower islandwide was devoted to fighting the 7,000-acre blaze, Fire Chief Ken Silva said today.
