Firefighters battle brushfire on Big Island

Advertiser Staff

Big Island firefighters are battling a brushfire today between Highway 11 and Maile Street in Pahala.

Three plantation homes on Maile Street were evacuated at about 1:20 p.m. because of heavy smoke and the threat from the fire, officials said.

Power lines are on the roadway and Maile Street still remains closed at 4 p.m. while firefighters continue to battle the blaze that has consumed about 100 acres in the Ka'u area of the Big Island.
