Want to chill for a while? Try Mauna Kea

It may be a balmy, late summer night almost anywhere in the 50th state at sea level, that is.But atop Mauna Kea, at the various telescopes, the temperature is still hovering around freezing.
In fact, at NASA's InfraRed Telescope Facility the temperature was 32.2 degrees at 3:30 a.m. today.
The University of Hawaii 88-inch telescope was reporting 34.5 degrees while the Keck facility posted a temperature of 34.8 degrees.
Wind speeds of 15 to 32 mph were being reported, making conditions seem even colder.
Honolulu International Airport, by comparison, was reporting 78 degrees as of 2:53 a.m. with humidity at 67 percent, resulting in a heat index of 80.
