Mall employees to help build Habitat home in Waianae

Advertiser Staff

More than 30 employees of shopping mall operator General Growth Properties plan to help complete a seven-bedroom residence in Wai'anae for a homeless family of 13 on Saturday.

The home at 89-201 Nanaikala St. has been under construction for six months using labor from more than 500 volunteers led by Habitat for Humanity.

The house on Hawaiian Homestead land is the largest Habitat home ever produced on O'ahu, and is for the Kaneakua family that has lived on the beach for years.

General Growth employees plan to pitch in with interior painting and other work from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The project is one of several that General Growth is involved with as part of a three-year partnership with Habitat to raise awareness, money and volunteer labor toward combating homelessness statewide.
