Kayaker rescued off Lanai; companion still missing

Advertiser Staff

LANAI CITY, Lanai — A Coast Guard helicopter rescued one of two overdue kayakers about 25 miles off Kaumalapau Harbor around 11 a.m. today, but his companion remains missing.

The second man's kayak was located about 2 miles south of the harbor but there was no sign of him, said Coast Guard petty officer Luke Clayton.

The names of the two kayakers have not been released but officials said they are believed to have been working on construction jobs on Lanai.

They reportedly went out on 12-foot-long blue motorized kayaks and were reported overdue last night.
