Felon accused with rental car break-in at Mokuleia

A 40-year-old man was charged with allegedly breaking into the rented car of a visiting Canadian couple Saturday at Mokuleia.

Joseph M. Kahawai, who has no permanent local address, is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail after being charged with unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle.

Kahawai, who has 32 prior convictions, is also being held on an $11,000 misdemeanor warrant.

The visitors called police after allegedly witnessing Kahawai breaking into their convertible by tearing open the top.
