Roadwork postponed to ease back-to-school traffic jam

Advertiser Staff

The roads are going to be packed today as nearly 60,000 students from the University of Hawai'i, community colleges and private schools return to classes.

In other words, plan to leave at least a half hour earlier for your morning commute. The state Department of Transportation is trying to help commuters get back into the flow by postponing most roadwork on the state's highways through Sept. 3. It's part of the DOT's "Beat the School Jam" campaign.

The DOT's suspension of roadwork will be at the following locations:

  • H-1 from Paiwa interchange to Kahala Mall

  • Kalaniana'ole Highway from Kahala Mall to Lunalilo Home Road

  • Kamehameha Highway from Acacia Road to Valkenburg Street

  • Nimitz Highway/Ala Moana Boulevard from Valkenburg Street to Kalakaua Avenue

  • Kalihi Street/Likelike Highway from Nimitz Highway to Kamehameha Highway
