Aloha Festivals' Falsetto Contest entries sought

Applications are now available for those interested in participating in the Annual Aloha Festivals Falsetto Contests, a popular program of the Aloha Festivals.

Falsetto dates back to a time when Hawaiian women were forbidden to sing in public, leaving men to sing the high-pitched notes usually reserved for women. In this Hawaiian art form, performers throw their voices into the upper registers of the musical scale, while singing stories of Hawaiian culture.

Contests will be held on the following dates and locations:

i Sept. 7 at the Hilton Kaua'i Beach, Kaua'i

i Sept. 8 at the Ha¯puna Beach Prince Hotel at Mauna Kea Resort, Hawai'i

i Oct. 12 at the McCoy Studio Theater at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center

i Sept. 28 at the Sheraton Waikiki Beach Resort's Kaua'i & Maui Ballrooms, O'ahu

Prizes for the O'ahu contest:

i First-place recipient wins a recording contract with Hula Records, $500, a weekend get-away for two, and $250 gift basket from Hawaiian Host Chocolates.

i Second-place winner will receive $300 and entry into the 2008 Kindy Sproat Falsetto and Storytelling Contest at Hapuna Beach Prince on the Big Island, including roundtrip airfare on Hawaiian Airlines, two night hotel accommodation, and $150 gift basket from Hawaiian Host Chocolates.

i Third place winner will receive $200 and entry to the 2007 Maui Richard Ho'opi'i Falsetto and Storytelling Contest, including roundtrip airfare on Hawaiian Airlines, one night hotel accommodation, and a $100 gift basket from Hawaiian Host Chocolates.

i Fourth place winner will receive $100 and entry into the 2007 Kaua'i Falsetto Contest, including roundtrip airfare on Hawaiian Airlines, one night hotel accommodation, and a $50 gift basket from Hawaiian Host Chocolates.

i The language award winner will receive $300 and a $50 basket from Hawaiian Host Chocolates.

Similar prizes will be offered on neighbor island contests.
