Boyd Gaming fined $185K for violations tied to deaths

Associated Press

LAS VEGAS — Boyd Gaming Corp. was fined $185,000 for nine violations of workplace standards after the investigation of two worker deaths at The Orleans hotel-casino in Las Vegas, authorities said.

The Nevada Occupational Safety and Health Administration began investigating the property on Feb. 2 when two workers died and one was hospitalized after trying to clear blocked grease traps in a manhole at the hotel.

The first worker entered the manhole, was exposed to gases and died. Two more engineers followed, and one of them died. The other was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

On top of the fine, Boyd agreed to improve its safety and health program in cooperation with Nevada OSHA at each of its properties in the state, the agency said.
