Four teens suspected of starting 2006 Waiakea High fire

Advertiser Staff

The April 2006 fire at Waiakea High School which caused $1.5 million damage was started by four teenagers, according to a Big Island police arson investigation report forwarded today to the county's Office of the Prosecuting Attorney.

Criminal Investigation Section Lt. Randall Medeiros said in a news release a detective working on an unrelated case developed information leading to the arrest of the teenage boys, all of them Hilo residents. One boy is now 18 years old while the others are 17, according to Medeiros.

The juveniles have been identified and contacted by police but none have been arrested, Medeiros said. It will be up to prosecutors to file for charges with Family Court, he added.

The 1:15 a.m. Waiakea fire on April 11, 2006, started in the administration building, also called "Building A," was deliberately set, the report said.
