WAIALUA
HFD will say today if fire out

Advertiser Staff

The 7,000-acre Waialua brushfire remained 100 percent contained yesterday, but Honolulu firefighters want to wait until today before declaring it out.

A tree that caught fire on the side of the road near the University of Hawai'i's Experimental Farm yesterday was extinguished but is an example of areas "that will attract attention because they're producing smoke," said HFD Capt. Terry Seelig.

The brushfire broke out Aug. 12 and defied firefighters' efforts for days.

The blaze was fanned by gusty winds, and firefighters were hampered by rugged terrain.
