"We want to try to win any tournament, game, whatever we can," said Kamehameha senior volleyball player Kanani Herring, the reigning Advertiser Player of the Year. "We want to go all out with a bang."

Kanani Herring helped her Kamehameha volleyball team accomplish a big feat on Saturday.

The Warriors became the first team from Hawai'i in a decade to win the Ann Kang Invitational Volleyball Tournament when it defeated Redondo Union (Calif.), 25-19, 25-22, at 'Iolani.

Pearl City was the last school from Hawai'i to win the tournament in 1997. Since then, the tournament champions have been a list of top teams from California.

"We want to try to win any tournament, game, whatever we can," said Herring, a senior who is the reigning Advertiser Player of the Year. "We want to go all out with a bang."

Herring had 12 kills in the tournament final, and was part of a strong and balanced team effort throughout the tournament. Kamehameha came in ranked fifth in the PrepVolleyball.com preseason poll. Redondo Union was ranked 17th.

"Our main point was to spread out our offense, not to run the same thing over and over," senior Bekah Torres said.

Redondo Union coach Tom Chaffins had praise for Herring and the Warriors, the two-time defending state champions.

"They played good sideout ball and they got the ball to their big hitter (Herring) and she had a great game," Chaffins said.

Kamehameha beat Redondo Union earlier Saturday afternoon 23-25, 25-15, 25-18. Chaffins tried to adjust his defense against Kamehameha in the final so hitters like Herring, Torres, Jordan Meredith and Alex Akana weren't "pegging that line."

But the coverage never came until Game 2 and an early 4-0 deficit hurt the Sea Hawks. After Redondo Union closed to 21-20, Herring buried a kill. Herring had another kill moments later to make it 24-21 and Akana's kill finished the match.

"We had a more challenging time the first time we played them," Herring said.

Herring played with the U.S. Girls' Youth National Team over the summer and returned home days before the start of the Ann Kang Tournament. She said she was excited to return to her team and the opportunity at playing Redondo Union, a team she watched on television.

"They're a very good team," Herring said. "I was very happy they came down to Hawai'i for this tournament. It was good for them to come down and level out the competition."
