A 28-year-old man was charged today in a federal complaint with dealing drugs and being in possession of a firearm.

Brian Sang Yi, of Honolulu, is being held overnight in the main police station cellblock pending an appearance tomorrow before a federal magistrate.

According to the complaint, Yi was carrying 42 plastic bags of cocaine, 16 bags of marijuana, 17 tablets of the drug with the street name "ecstasy," a 9 mm automatic pistol with two unloaded magazines, and $5,755 cash in his backpack plus

$851 on his person.

The drugs and gun came to the attention of police after Yi suffered a minor leg injury in a moped crash Monday night and was taken to The Queen's Medical Center.

While en route to the hospital, Yi allegedly told Emergency Medical Services personnel that he had a handgun in his backpack, the complaint said.

Hospital security people were informed and an X-ray scan of the backpack showed a gun. Police were then called.

Yi was arrested at 9:10 p.m. on suspicion of first-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, second-degree promotion of a harmful drug, second-degree promotion of a detrimental drug, and for firearm offenses.

The case was investigated by the Honolulu Violent Incident Crime Task Force for federal prosecution.
