Baseball: Braves' Renteria aggravates right ankle injury

Associated Press

CINCINNATI — Edgar Renteria aggravated his right ankle injury on the first pitch he saw during Atlanta's game tonight against Cincinnati.

Braves spokesman Adam Liberman said Renteria will be reevaluated on Thursday after he "tweaked" his ankle during his first at-bat since coming off the 15-day disabled list before the game. Renteria had missed 17 games since Aug. 3 with a sprained ankle.

Renteria took a ball from Reds starter Bronson Arroyo, slightly lifting and striding with his left foot before briefly stumbling backward. He stepped out of the batter's box and was attended to by a team trainer, with manager Bobby Cox joining the discussion.

Renteria was replaced by Yunel Escobar, who grounded out.

Renteria was batting second in Atlanta's lineup. He entered the night hitting .336 with 11 home runs and 53 RBIs in 105 games.

Also Wednesday, the Braves optioned infielder Martin Prado to Triple-A Richmond.
