'Design For All' conference to probe disability access

Advertiser Staff

The state Department of Health Disability and Communication Access Board (DCAB) will present the 2007 Design For All Conference Sept. 6 at Ala Moana Hotel.

The conference is an opportunity for individuals and design professionals to learn, share ideas and promote exemplary designs that respect all people: children, adults, seniors and those with disabilities.

Opening keynote speaker, Edward Steinfeld, professor of architecture and director of the Center for Inclusive Design and Environmental Access, is an expert in home design, accessibility, and modification for seniors.

Luncheon keynote speaker, Russ Saito, state comptroller from the Department of Accounting and General Services, will speak about the new state Building Code Council and statewide model building code. Other seminar topics will focus on residential design, outdoor developed areas, urban design and planning, and facility access.

In addition, Gov. Linda Lingle and state Director of Health Dr. Chiyome Fukino will present the first Accessible Design Awards. These awards recognize buildings, facilities and sites that are accessible, aesthetic, functional, and enhance the entire user experience.

The cost of the conference is $75, and includes a continental breakfast, four break-out sessions, and the luncheon. Additional information and registration is available at: www.hawaii.gov/health/dcab.
