Tennis: Federer, Henin named top seeds for U.S. Open

Associated Press

NEW YORK — Defending champion Roger Federer could face Andy Roddick in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open, a little earlier than last year.

The two met in the final last year, and Federer won his third straight U.S. Open title. Roddick, the No. 5 seed, won the 2003 U.S. Open.

Justine Henin, the No. 1 women's seed, has a tough road to the final with both Serena and Venus Williams in her half of the draw, which was announced today. The Williams sisters could meet in the semifinals.

Defending champion Maria Sharapova, the No. 2 seed, seems to have an easier road to the final. Her potential semifinal opponent is No. 4 seed Svetlana Kutznetsova.

Federer and No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal can only meet in the final, and Nadal would need to get past third-seeded Novak Djokovic in the semifinals.

Federer, bidding for his 12th Grand Slam title, will try to become the first man since the 1920s to win the U.S. championship four years in a row.

Henin won the U.S. Open in 2003 and was the runner-up to Sharapova last year.

Also in Henin's half of the draw is No. 5 Ana Ivanovic and No. 3 Jelena Jankovic.
