Georgia man among 14 killed in fatal crash

A Georgia man was among 14 U.S. soldiers killed today when a Black Hawk helicopter crashed during a nighttime mission in northern Iraq, according to WJXT-TV in Jacksonville, Fla.

The station identified Army Capt. Corry Paul Tyler as one of those killed.

Tyler was described by those who knew him as an extraordinary man. A close family friend told the station that Tyler graduated at the top of his class at Camden County High School, it reported on its Web site.

In 1999, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

"They were very, very proud of Corry. That's all Terry talked about," Dr. William Warnock told the TV station.

Warnock is the pastor at First United Methodist Church in Woodbine, Ga. Warnock said he knows the Tyler family, and that he spent some time with them today.

"Mrs. Tyler is broken," Warnock said.

Tyler's father died last year, and Warnock said today's news was especially hard on Tyler's mother.

Tyler was the sole male survivor in his family, and for that reason was not required to return to Iraq. However, the West Point graduate volunteered for his third tour of duty.

"It speaks highly of his integrity. I served in the service, and any person who volunteers — they're just special, just absolutely special people," said Warnock.

Tyler is survived by his wife, Kathy, and three small children who live in Washington.
