Boxing: Waimanalo's Escalante wins at U.S. Trials

Waimanalo's Bruno Escalante decisioned Juan Leija of Alvin, Texas, 26-20, today to remain in contention at the U.S. Olympic Boxing Trials in Houston.

Escalante, competing in the flyweight (112 pounds) division, is trying to advance through the challengers bracket in the double-elimination tournament that will decide the 11 boxers who will represent the U.S. at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

In the 178-pound winners bracket, Christopher Downs of Fort Carson, Colo., decisioned Yathomas Riley of San Diego, 11-9. Downs is a U.S. Army staff sergeant who was previously stationed at Schofield Barracks and began his boxing career in Hawai'i.

Competition continues through Sunday.
