Unclaimed property searches available at Liliha fest

Advertiser Staff

The state Department of Budget and Finance's Unclaimed Property Program team will be available at Saturday's annual I Love Liliha Festival to conduct searches for unclaimed property, file claims, and answer questions about unclaimed property.

The team will be at the festival 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Kawananakoa Middle School cafeteria, at 49 Funchal St.

There is no fee for this public service, and interested persons only need to provide their name in order to conduct a search.

The State of Hawai'i holds in safekeeping approximately $130 million of unclaimed property and in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2007, the program returned more than $4 million to rightful owners.

The Unclaimed Property Program receives and holds abandoned or unclaimed property such as money, bank accounts, certificates of deposit, negotiable instruments, gift certificates, credit balances, insurance refunds and so on that in most cases, has remained inactive for a period of at least five years.

Interested parties can also conduct an online search by going to www.unclaimedproperty.hawaii.gov and clicking on "search for unclaimed property" or by calling the unclaimed property program at 586-1589 to determine if they may have funds or unclaimed property due to them.
