Escalante wins U.S. boxing bout

Waimanalo's Bruno Escalante decisioned Juan Leija of Alvin, Texas, 26-20, yesterday to remain in contention at the U.S. Olympic Boxing Trials in Houston.

Escalante, competing in the flyweight (112 pounds) division, is trying to advance through the challengers bracket in the double-elimination tournament that will decide the 11 boxers who will represent the U.S. at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Escalante is scheduled to fight Qa'id Muhammad of Atlantic City, N.J., today.

In the 178-pound winners bracket, Christopher Downs of Fort Carson, Colo., decisioned Yathomas Riley of San Diego, 11-9. Downs is a U.S. Army staff sergeant who was previously stationed at Schofield Barracks and began his boxing career in Hawai'i.

FOOD INDUSTRY HELPS

The Hawai'i Food Industry Association donated $7,250 raised from ticket sales for last weekend's Made in Hawai'i Festival to the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Fever scholarship fund.

Richard Botti, president of the Hawai'i Food Industry Association, presented a check to UH coaches Bob Nash, Jim Bolla and Carmyn James at the Blaisdell Arena on Saturday.

The Hawai'i Food Industry Association gave 25 cents from each festival ticket to Rainbow Fever.

Nash also was awarded $500 for the UH men's basketball team by winning the "Coaches Chili Cook-Off Challenge."
