IRS scam alert issued on Big Island

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i County police are warning the public about an Internet scam by someone posing as the Internal Revenue Service.

A Holualoa man reported receiving an e-mail from the IRS that claimed he was getting a tax refund. It asked him to fill out an online tax refund request that sought personal information. Police determined that the message was not sent from the IRS.

Police ask the public to be suspicious of any requests for personal information over the Internet or by telephone.
