Japanese Cultural Center genealogy workshop offered

Advertiser Staff

The Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii is offering a genealogy workshop, Finding Your Roots, at the center.

Attendees will participate in a three-segment workshop that covers varying subjects from basic information needed to begin their family's genealogy research to an introduction of genealogy computer software as well as limited Japanese translations of family documents, such as their koseki tohon (family registry). This year's workshop will also feature presentations by other ethnic study groups, including the Honolulu Genealogical Society, Portuguese Genealogical Society of Hawaii and the Okinawan Genealogical Society. Registration recommended by Monday, Oct. 1.

"This is one of the JCCH's most requested programs," said Mandy Westfall, JCCH programs director, "We are also finding that these requests are from people of mixed ancestry who want to trace their Japanese heritage as well as their other ethnic backgrounds. The JCCH felt it was important to honor our multicultural island heritage with introductions to other genealogical societies."

Date and Time: Saturday, Oct. 13, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Description of event: Learn how to tend to your family tree at this workshop presented by the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i (JCCH) and Hawai'i Hiroshima Heritage Study Group (H3SG).

Cost/Entry Fee: $50 for JCCH members; $60 for nonmembers. Fee includes a 143-page manual, lunch and refreshments and limited translation services.
