News conference today over Hawaii Superferry ruling

Advertiser Staff

The state Department of Transportation has scheduled a news conference for 1:30 p.m. today to discuss yesterday's Hawai'i Supreme Court ruling requiring an environmental review of $40 million in harbor improvements to accommodate the Hawaii Superferry.

It remains unclear what impact the ruling will have on the company's plans to start interisland service Tuesday, although opponents said they will file a request for an injunction to stop the ferry until an environmental review is done.

The Sierra Club, Maui Tomorrow and the Kahului Harbor Coalition had gone to court on Maui to contest the state's determination the harbor improvements were exempt from a review.

When Second Circuit Judge Joseph Cardoza dismissed the case, the groups sought an appeal from the Supreme Court.
