Criminal probe opened in Waialua fire

Advertiser Staff

A brushfire that charred more than 7,000 acres in Waialua earlier this month was intentionally set in a pile of dried brush, the Honolulu Fire Department said today.

Investigators determined that the fire began in a brush pile on the slope of an irrigation reservoir one-quarter mile west of Kamehameha Highway and 1 mile east of Poamoho Gulch.

The case has been turned over to the Honolulu Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division for further investigation.

The fire began Aug. 12. Fanned by strong winds and a large amount of dry fuel, it burned out of control for several days. It was declared extinguished on Aug. 21.
