A memorial service for Douglas "Dukie" Kuahulu, a longtime Waikiki beachboy and member of the first voyage of the Hokule'a, will be at 8 a.m. today at the Aloha Beach Services stand in Waikiki where he had worked for about 40 years.

The stand is on the beach fronting Duke's Waikiki.

The service will be followed by the scattering of his ashes from outrigger canoes in the waters off Waikiki.

The voyaging canoe Hokule'a will be anchored offshore during the ceremony.

Beach attire is recommended.

Kuahulu died Aug. 11 of esophageal cancer. He was 70.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; sister, Masae Konno; nephews; nieces; and his beach family.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Polynesian Voyaging Society, 191 Ala Moana, Pier 7, Honolulu, HI 96813.
