Honolulu's Jones skates to three golds at nationals

Jennifer Jones of Honolulu won three gold medals and two silvers at the U.S. Figure Skating Showcase Nationals in Fort Collins, Colo., Aug. 8 to 12.
Jones won gold in the extemporaneous event (where skaters must perform after hearing music for the first time); the dramatic event; and in the light entertainment event.
Jones teamed with Gabby Gustafson of California to take a silver in the skating in duet competition. She also won a silver in the extemporaneous improv event.
In the final event of the competition, which matched the winners of all the events, Jones finished in fourth place, winning a pewter medal.
Jones, 33, is a figure skating instructor at the Ice Palace in Salt Lake. She will be taking a group of youths to a regional championship in Salt Lake City in October.
SONIDO STANDS OUT AT CHESS TOURNAMENTS
Charles Sonido, a 16-year-old from Kane'ohe, finished 21st at the 23rd Annual Denker High School Championship in Cherry Hill, N.J.
Sonido, an honors student at Punahou School and member of the Buffanblu chess team, finished second at the 108th U.S. Open, which was also held at Cherry Hill.
With a U.S. Chess Federation rating of 1596, Sonido was seeded No. 41 in a field of the nation's top 51 high school chess champions, but tied for 21st place in the Denker tournament.
After his showing in the tournaments, Sonido's USCF rating improved to 1773.
