Lahaina's Larsen takes men's open NSSA title

Granger Larsen took advantage of his home surf to win the open men's division of an NSSA Hawai'i Region contest last weekend at Lahaina Harbor, Maui.
Larsen, who is from Lahaina, edged Kaua'i's Dylan Goodale in the final of the open men's division, which is considered the top division of the contest.
It was the opening contest of the 2007-08 season for the NSSA Hawai'i Region, and around 160 scholastic surfers from around the state participated.
Lahiki Minamishin from the Big Island was the standout of the weekend, winning the open juniors, open boys and explorer menehune divisions.
Ezekiel Lau from Honolulu had the best score of the weekend, receiving a 9.5 (out of 10) to win the explorer boys division.
Other division winners were: Coco Ho (open women), Seth Moniz (open mini-groms), DK Walsh (open longboard), Alessa Quizon (explorer women), Malia Manuel (explorer girls), and Shaun Walsh (explorer longboard).
The remainder of the NSSA Hawai'i Region schedule: Sept. 8 and 9 at PK's, Kaua'i; Sept. 29 and 30 at Sunset Beach, O'ahu; Oct. 27 and 28 at Banyans, Big Island; Jan. 26 and 27 at Pine Trees, Kaua'i; March 1 and 2 at Hale'iwa, O'ahu; March 8 and 9 at Lahaina Harbor, Maui.
The top surfers from the season will represent Hawai'i at the NSSA National Championships at San Clemente, Calif., next June.
KAUHANE WINS KIMO'S
Kalei Kauhane of Lahaina won the 30th annual Kimo's Longboard Contest last weekend at Mala Wharf, Maui.
The contest was run in 3- to 4-foot waves, and more than 50 longboard surfers competed. The contest is unique in that it follows a double-elimination format.
Mark Anderson placed second, followed by Albert Jenks, Dwayne Ignacio, Pete Peterson and Kirk Snyder.
GIRLS WHO SURF RESULTS
Yukiko Whiteside received a new surfboard for winning the shortboard final of the Girls Who Surf Amateur Wahine Contest last weekend at Kewalo Basin.
Runner-up Izumi Baldwin received inter-island airlines tickets, and third-place Dax McGill won a photo shoot from wahine surf.net.
Ashley Ahina won the longboard division, and Emi Yamanoshita won the bodyboard division.
The event was for females only, and featured a judging panel of some of the state's top female surfers.
