Healing Garden fest is where nature, nurture meet

Makana performs at the Hawaii Health Guide's Hawaii Healing Garden festival today at the Waimea Valley Audubon Center. It's an all-day celebration of multicultural medicinal and nutritional plants of Hawai'i. Polynesian, Hawaiian, Ayurvedic, Chinese and Filipino cultural practitioners and ethnobotanists will share their knowledge of Hawai'i's botanical remedies. There will also be a lei contest, with registration from 10 to 11 a.m., and judging at 11:30 a.m.

Here's the festival schedule:

10-11 a.m.: Ayurveda's Spices of Life, Dr. Tamar Hoffman

11 a.m.-noon: Hawaii La'u Lapa'au Study of the Vascular System, Kaipo Kane Akua

Noon-1 p.m.: Hula lecture and presentation, kumu hula Kehaulani Kekua of Halau Palaihiwa O Kaipuwai

1-2 p.m.: Nani Lei O Wailua Hula Halau presentation

2-3 p.m.: "Filipino Herbs & Plants for Health," with Pat Aguillana

3-4 p.m.: "Demystifying Chinese Dietary Therapy — Healthy Chinese Cooking," with Leon Letoto

4-5 p.m.: La'au lapa'au Hawaiian medicinal demonstration and lecture, wth Uala Lenta

5-6 p.m.: Brazilian capoeira by Contra Mestre Entrada, Rod Ussing and Capoeira Hawaii

6-7 p.m.: Kaua'i singer-songwriter Millicent Cummings

7-9 p.m.: Makana and special guests Lono Kaumeheiwa and Lopaka Colon.
