UH-Hilo, Chaminade win two at Hawaiian Style

The Hawai'i-Hilo and Chaminade women's volleyball teams won their first two matches of the season last night at the Hawaiian Style Classic in Hilo.

Lauren Bayer had 14 kills and Morgan Bonney added 13 in the Vulcans' 30-28, 30-22, 27-30, 30-23 victory over Briar Cliff (Iowa). Desiree Agader had 54 assists for the Vulcans.

Hawai'i-Hilo got 15 kills from Josimara Pinheiro and 10 from Hillary Hurley in a 30-28, 30-16, 30-25 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay.

Evelyn Bluthenthal had 24 kills and Alexandra Beard added 11 as the Silverswords beat Alaska-Fairbanks, 30-17, 30-23, 31-33, 30-20. Tatiana Alvino had 42 assists for the Silverswords.

In its second match, Chaminade beat Briar Cliff, 22-30, 33-31, 30-27, 30-18. Trina Kauliakamoa, Samantha Miller and Bluthenthal combined for 57 kills for Chaminade.

Hawai'i Pacific lost to Rollins (Fla.), 30-24, 31-29, 30-27, last night to drop to 0-2 on the season. Antje Buskies had nine kills for the Sea Warriors.

In other matches: Houston Baptist defeated CS Monterey Bay, 30-15, 30-26, 26-30, 30-27; Houston Baptist beat Rollins (Fla.), 25-30, 30-22, 30-27, 30-17; and Alaska-Fairbanks beat Texas Woman's University, 23-30, 30-27, 30-20, 15-30, 15-7.

BYU-HAWAI'I SPLITS PAIR AT LOS ANGELES TOURNEY

Brigham Young-Hawai'i split its first two matches of the season last night at the Cal State Los Angeles/Cal Poly Pomona Tournament in Los Angeles.

Agnes Tuilevuka had 18 kills and Noelle Filimoeatu added 17 for the Seasiders in a 30-28, 30-24, 21-30, 30-27 victory over Central Washington.

In their second match, the Seasiders lost to Cal State Los Angeles, 27-30, 30-21, 30-27, 30-27. Filimoeatu had 18 kills and Tuilevuka added 15.

35TH ANNIVERSARY DINNER THURSDAY

The celebration of the 35th anniversary of Title IX and women's athletics at the University of Hawai'i will be Thursday, Aug. 30 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom.
