2 Isle Red Cross volunteers join Midwest flood relief effort

Advertiser Staff

HONOLULU — Two volunteers from the Hawaii State Chapter of the American Red Cross have gone to Oklahoma to join the Red Cross relief effort in response to the devastating floods.

Rainstorms, including remnants of Tropical Storm Erin, have caused persistent flooding throughout parts of the Midwest and southern U.S. This flooding has damaged thousands of homes and businesses, and has claimed at least 20 lives.

Denn Ko, a registered nurse and Red Cross volunteer from Wailuku, Maui, will serve as a health services worker on the relief operation. Doris Wolfe, a volunteer from 'Aiea, will support flood victims as a disaster mental health counselor.

The American Red Cross is offering a variety of services to those affected by this flooding, from sheltering and feeding affected residents and emergency workers, to providing damage assessment and counseling to families as they begin to recover from their losses.

This group is part of a national network of Red Cross disaster volunteers who are trained to deploy to large relief operations for up to three week assignments. Community members interested in becoming local or national disaster volunteers should contact their nearest Red Cross office. All Red Cross disaster training is open to the public and offered at no cost.
