A U.S. Coast Guard cutter has cleared out protesters at Nawilwili Harbor to allow the Hawaii Superferry to dock on Kaua'i.

Using three inflatable boats, Coast Guard officials herded off dozens of surfers and swimmers protesting the Superferry after the groups held up the docking for roughly two hours.

The 350-foot Alakai arrived near the mouth of the harbor around 6 p.m. today but was turned back at the request of the Coast Guard due to the large gathering at the harbor, said John Garibaldi, Hawaii Superferry's president and chief executive officer.

An Advertiser reporter at the scene estimated at least 250 people were on the docks or in the water protesting.
