OIA Football game ends in brawl

By Wes Nakama

'AIEA — An O'ahu Interscholastic Association football game between 'Aiea and Campbell last night ended in chaos and then confusion about the outcome after a benches-clearing brawl with 57.3 seconds remaining on the clock.

An OIA football committee will meet tomorrow morning to make a ruling on the outcome, which could result in a rare double-forfeit and both teams having to also forfeit their next game in the coming week.

With 'Aiea ahead, 33-26, and about one minute remaining on the game clock, a punch was thrown after an 'Aiea running play. Players from both teams instantly jumped into the scuffle, and most of the Campbell players on the nearby sidelines rushed the field, as did about half the players from the 'Aiea bench on the far side.

Several minor scuffles ensued, and three teenaged fans ran onto the field from the 'Aiea side, but then turned back after all of the players were separated within about 20 seconds.

Both head coaches then gathered their entire teams on their respective sidelines for some impassioned instructions, and after about three minutes, 'Aiea coach Wendell Say ordered his team to the locker room.

"We were just trying to run out the clock, but then tempers flared," Say said. "I thought it would be best to get our kids off the field, I didn't want to make the situation worse. I'm disappointed that some of our players reacted the way they did (after the last play)."

Campbell's team and fans soon left the stadium without incident while head official Ralph Hasegawa discussed the game's status with each school's athletic director.

According to Campbell athletic director Sam Delos Reyes, Hasegawa called an end to the game because Campbell was left without any eligible players. By OIA rule, any player who either is involved in an on-field fight or enters the field from the sidelines during a fight is automatically ejected.

Delos Reyes said that since basically the entire Campbell team was on the field, all of its players would be ejected.

But OIA football coordinator Harold Tanaka said the game's final outcome cannot be determined until the league receives a report from officials commissioner Jim Beavers and the committee reviews video accounts of the incident.

"We have to see which players should be ejected," Tanaka said.

Under OIA rules, any player ejected from a game for unsportsmanlike conduct also is ineligible for the next game. If Campbell and 'Aiea do not have enough eligible players for their next game, they could face a second forfeit.

"Win or lose, what's more important to me is the safety and the integrity of our players," Say said. "If we have to forfeit, then make that be a lesson to the kids."

Say said the game was competitive up to the end.

"Both teams played hard, so it's sad that it had to end this way," Say said. "This (brawl) is not football, it's not what we teach at 'Aiea and I'm sure it's not what they teach at Campbell. Our kids gotta learn to control themselves. I always tell them, 'Let's step on the field as gentlemen and leave the field as gentlemen.' "
