Maui groups go to court to halt Hawaii Superferry

Advertiser Staff

Three Maui groups pushing for an environmental review of Hawaii Superferry operations today filed a request in 2nd Circuit Court for a temporary restraining order to immediately halt the interisland service.

Attorney Isaac Hall also is asking for a permanent injunction to keep the ferry out of service until the state Department of Transportation conducts an environmental review of $40 million in state-funded harbor improvements to accommodate the Superferry.

Judge Joseph Cardoza has yet to act on the requests.

The Hawaii Supreme Court on Thursday said the state erred in not requiring an environmental review.

The ruling reversed an earlier decision by Cardoza that dismissed a complaint filed by Maui Tomorrow, the Kahului Harbor Coalition and the Sierra Club.
