NFL: Giants' Tyree breaks wrist, out 6 weeks

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — One-time special teams Pro Bowler David Tyree of the New York Giants will be sidelined up to six weeks with a broken left wrist.

Tyree will have surgery, coach Tom Coughlin said today, adding that the team was willing to keep him on the roster in hopes of getting him back.

The five-year veteran was hurt Saturday during the 20-12 preseason loss to the New York Jets.

Coughlin said Tyree did not report the injury after the game and had swelling in the wrist yesterday. X-rays found the break.

Coughlin also was concerned about receiver Plaxico Burress, who missed practice today because of a back problem and was being examined by doctors in New York City.

Coughlin said Burress' back started acting up last week.

"What provoked it I don't know," Coughlin said.

Burress already missed more than two weeks of training camp with a sprained ankle. He returned to practice last week, but he sat out the Jets game after developing the flu.

Cornerback E.J. Underwood, who broke his jaw against the Jets, might be back at practice in a week.

But Robert Douglas, the only fullback on the roster, will need arthroscopic surgery after suffering a knee injury against the Jets.

Halfback Reuben Droughns will play some fullback in the preseason finale Thursday against the Patriots in New England.

"I am concerned any time anybody is not out there," Coughlin said. "Again, you fight it all the time. You have to get the people who are here ready to go."

The Giants made seven roster moves today, but they are still one player over the 75-man limit that must be reached by tomorrow.

Veteran defensive tackle Marcus Bell was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury. Tight end Rodney Burgess was waived-injured with a bad shoulder. Waived outright were receiver Will Buchanon, defensive back Richard Yancy, center Nick Jones, offensive lineman Myniya Smith and linebacker Karibi Dede.\
