Honolulu firefighters are at the scene of a fire in Kaimuki's Wilhelmina Rise area on Mariposa Drive that reportedly started in a two-story house and witnesses said has spread to an adjacent lanai of a house above on Monterey Drive.

The fire was reported to the Honolulu Fire Department shortly before 8:10 a.m. Six engines responded and the blaze was reportedly under control at 8:53 a.m.

Honolulu paramedics took a 34-year-old, male firefighter to Straub Hospital and Clinic in stable condition after he suffered heat exhaustion, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city's emergency services department.

Three individuals were evacuated from residences. No injuries were reported.

Fire officials this morning said they were still gathering information about the extent of the damage.

Andrew Mitchell, 24, of Albany, N.Y., was watching television in the living room of a friend's house when he spotted the fire next door on Mariposa Drive.

"I grabbed the phone and called 911 and ran outside," Mitchell said.

By the time he got outside, the occupants were already leaving the burning house.

"The top floor was engulfed in the flame," Mitchell said. "Then the deck on the house above caught fire. It overhangs the back yard of the other house."
