Superferry protesters arrive at Oahu pier

Advertiser Staff

About 11 people carrying signs that say "Stop Superferry" and "Support Kauai People" have arrived at an O'ahu pier where passengers bound for Kaua'i were told the voyage was canceled.

The protesters said they were trying for solidarity with the people on Kaua'i in their opposition to the project.

"I'm here because we're supporting Kaua'i," said Keali'i Collier of 'Aiea.

Collier was also concerned about his belief that the Superferry was going to be used to transport Army Stryker vehicles to the Big Island and the training areas there.

"The Superferry is definitely for the Stryker brigade," said Ikaika Hussey of the group DMZ Hawaii Aloha Aina, a group that opposes military presence on the Islands.

"We're not just opposed to transporting the Strykers, we're opposed to Strykers in Hawai'i."

Four Honolulu police officers were on the scene, along with harbor police.

Some Superferry passengers who were driving out of Pier 19 after the Kaua'i trip was canceled yelled at the protesters, who yelled right back.
