Police release names of arrested Superferry protesters

By Jan TenBruggencate
Advertiser Kaua‘i Bureau

Kaua'i police said 11 people, including four juveniles, were arrested at Monday night's Superferry protest at Nawiliwili Harbor.

That brings to a total of 14 the number of people arrested on Kaua'i since the Superferry began operating Sunday.

Most, but not all, of the people arrested Monday were believed to be part of a protest blockade of swimmers and surfers that prevented the ferry from entering the harbor.

Police identified those arrested as:

Matthew J. Hamm, 25, obstruction of justice, disorderly conduct.

Gilbert A. Nieto, 49, obstruction of justice, disorderly conduct.

Alan L. Zebe, 36, obstruction of justice, disorderly conduct.

Kana S. Kirkpatrick, 36, obstruction of justice, disorderly conduct and criminal trespass in the second degree.

Shane K. Valiere, 21, obstruction of justice, disorderly conduct and criminal trespass in the first degree.

Steven M. Valiere, 55, obstruction of justice.

Robert Pa, 46, disorderly conduct.

All were released on bail Monday night after arrest.

The names, ages and charges of the four juveniles were not released. All were released into the custody of their parents.

Most were arrested by the Coast Guard, but no federal charges have been brought. However, Coast Guard officials said that photographs and video of protesters in the water, along with other documentation of the protest, was being turned over to the U.S. Attorney's office for possible action.

Three adults were arrested Sunday night during the protest.
