Honolulu Jazz Quartet gears up for first Mainland tour

By Wayne Harada
Advertiser Entertainment Writer

The Honolulu Jazz Quartet is going on the road.

The foursome, led by John Kolivas, will embark on its first Mainland tour between Sept. 17 and 27, with stops at Anthology in San Diego, Catalina's Jazz Club in Los Angeles, the KRML radio station in Monterey and The Lodge at Sonoma. Seattle may be added to its itinerary.

"It will be a wonderful experience to take our form of straight-ahead jazz on the road," said Kolivas. "The group is looking forward to branching out and playing for different audiences."

The tour is the result of HJQ's "Tenacity" CD, which has been positively reviewed with airplay in the U.S. and abroad.

To gear up for travel expenses, HJQ will perform, joined by special guests, at 7 p.m. Sept. 13 at Studio 6, the facility at the Musicians Association of Hawai'i headquarters on Kapi'olani Boulevard.

Tickets are $20. Information: 383-3909.
