Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i's median household income ranked as the fourth highest in the nation last year, according to a U.S. Census Bureau report released today.

The state's median income was $61,160, up 5.2 percent from a year earlier. Only Maryland, New Jersey and Connecticut had higher income.

The report found that income rose nationwide for a second year, with the median U.S. household earning $48,451, while the poverty rate declined for the first time this decade.

Other findings included:

  • The percentage of people below the poverty level in Hawai'i was 9.3 percent, a decline from 2005's 9.8 percent.

  • The number of children in the state below the poverty level also declined to 11.4 percent from 12.7 percent.

  • The percentage of households receiving cash public assistance income was 3.5 percent, or fifth in the nation.

  • Hawai'i ranked third nationally in terms of the percentage of households with retirement income, or 22.2 percent.

The report also noted Hawai'i was among the five lowest states in terms of the percentage of people without health insurance.
