First Thursdays begins new slam poetry season Sept. 6

HawaiiSlam will begin its 2007-08 season of First Thursdays slam poetry competition next week with live performances by two New York-based acts.

Manhattan singer-songwriter Sparla Swa will perform her blend of neo-soul and acoustic folk. Brooklyn multimedia artists and HBO Def Poetry Jam veterans Climbing Poe Tree will perform its original slam poetry.

Host Kealoha will lead an evening that will also feature live painters, massages and spins from DJ Toki.

Local poets will compete for a couple of spots in next year's HawaiiSlam Grand Slam finals competition.

Doors open at 7:45 p.m., Sept. 6, at the Hawaiian Hut in the Ala Moana Hotel. Show starts at 8:30 p.m.

Admission is $3 before 8:30 p.m. and $5 thereafter.
