The Maui Police Department today announced the promotion of Jody Singsank to captain, the highest rank ever attained by a woman in the department's history.

Her promotion is effective Saturday, according to a news release.

A Kula native and Maui High graduate, Singsank will be the Moloka'i patrol district commander when she completes her current assignment as accreditation manager of the MPD's Quality Assurance Section on Oct. 16.

The former Jody Murata joined the Maui Police Department in April 1986. She has worked in criminal investigation; patrol in the Lahaina, Wailuku and Hana districts, and is assistant team leader of the department's crisis negotiation unit.

A University of Hawai'i at Manoa graduate, Singsank was named the National Association of Police Organization's "Top Cop" in 1996.
