SUNSET BEACH
Lifetime award to surfer Rarick

Advertiser Staff

Randy Rarick, surfer and surf business leader, has received a lifetime achievement award from the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association.

Rarick, a Sunset Beach resident, has had a hand in every significant event in the surf world in the past 40 years, according to a SIMI press release.

Taught by the legendary Rabbit Kekai, Rarick surfed in the early professional competitions, was Hawai'i state champion in 1967, made more than 8,000 surfboards and helped form the group International Professional Surfers. He also co-created the Hawaiian Triple Crown with Senator Fred Hemmings.

State Sen. Fred Hemmings, a world surf champion, presented the award Friday.

Correction: Sen. Fred Hemmings was co-creator of the Hawaiian Triple Crown with Randy Rarick. A previous version of this story credited only Rarick.
