1 big fight, 2 forfeits

 •  OIA pulls no punches with ruling

Saturday night's benches-clearing fight between the 'Aiea and Campbell football teams will ultimately cost each squad an O'ahu Interscholastic Association loss by forfeit next week, cause probable significant losses in league gate receipts and likely cut into concession profits at Kapolei and Wai'anae.

The OIA's football committee, citing league bylaws, determined yesterday that 'Aiea and Campbell will play their scheduled interleague games this weekend against Saint Louis and Kamehameha, respectively, but they will forfeit their OIA Western Division games the following week as a result of the game-ending brawl.

Players who are ejected from a game must sit out the next OIA game. 'Aiea was scheduled to play at Kapolei next week and Campbell was set to play at Wai'anae.

Now, only the JV games will be played at each site.

Both varsity games were expected to draw big crowds, so the forfeits mean lost revenue from gate receipts and concession sales. The OIA shares in all ticket sales, and host schools get to keep their concession money.

"It hurts everybody," OIA executive director Dwight Toyama said. "Campbell-Wai'anae and 'Aiea-Kapolei — we were expecting a big gate from both those games. But we have to (enforce the forfeits). We cannot condone that kind of stuff (fighting)."

Review of game film was inconclusive as far as the exact number of players who left both sidelines Saturday at 'Aiea to join the on-field fight, which ended the game with 57.3 seconds remaining. But Toyama said that judging by the amount of players who were on the field, basically the entire squad from both sides is presumed to have left the bench.

Under OIA and National Federation of State High School Associations rules, any player entering the field from the sidelines during an on-field altercation is automatically ejected.

"It was impossible to figure out who left the sidelines (based on the film) and from what the officials gave us," Toyama said. "There were too many people on the field, so the committee decided both teams would forfeit the next (league) game. It was unanimous."

Campbell athletic director Sam Delos Reyes conceded after the game that basically all of the Sabers rushed the field during the altercation. 'Aiea athletic director Blake Moritsugu and coach Wendell Say did not know how many of their players left the sidelines to join the fight, but Moritsugu yesterday accepted the committee's ruling.

"The bottom line is there were a lot of our players who ran onto the field, and you just can't do that," Moritsugu said. "There's no place for leaving the sidelines, and we have to accept the consequences."

Moritsugu said the 'Aiea players were informed of the ruling during a lunch meeting yesterday.

"They were upset, but I think the decision was fair and we accept it," Moritsugu said. "We support the OIA's decision, and hopefully our kids will learn from this. It hurts to lose a game, but beyond that we have to look at what the players can learn from it. We're trying to teach them to be good citizens."

Also yesterday, the OIA football committee ruled that the score from Saturday's game, which had 'Aiea leading 33-26, will stand. Na Ali'i were facing a fourth-and-14 on their 49-yard line when the game was halted.

"We probably would have punted," said Say, who added that Campbell had used its final timeout.

On 'Aiea's previous punt, Campbell's Samson Anguay returned it 50 yards for a touchdown.

But Toyama said that after consulting with OIA officials commissioner Jim Beavers and the National Federation rule book, it was determined that a game still can be considered official even if the final seconds are not played out.

"It's kind of like a five-inning baseball game," Toyama said.

'AIEA 33, CAMPBELL 26

Keenan Naeole completed 17 of 26 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns and also scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak Saturday to help Na Ali'i hold off the visiting Sabers in an OIA Western Division game.

Naeole's 1-yard TD run gave 'Aiea a 33-18 lead with 6:57 remaining, but Campbell closed it to 33-26 with 2:05 left after Samson Anguay's 50-yard punt return for a touchdown and Kevin Newcomb's two-point conversion pass to Martin Kodama.

Na Ali'i tried to run out the clock on the ensuing possession, but they were dropped for a 4-yard loss on third-and-10 from the Sabers' 47 with 57.3 seconds left. That's when a benches-clearing fight erupted and the game was suspended soon after.

Anguay, a 5-foot-7, 140-pound sophomore running back, finished with 272 all-purpose yards, including 222 yards and three touchdowns on 12 carries.
