Advertiser Staff

Police arrested 25-year-old Canadian man early this morning after he allegedly assaulted a 52-year-old man and then broke into an apartment in the Young Street area that was occupied by a 61-year-old woman and her 13-year-old son.

The older man told police he was walking down the street at about 1:45 a.m. when the younger man punched him behind the right ear without provocation, resulting in a deep cut and a concussion. The man told police he then watched as the man continued walking down the street and then broke into an apartment.

The woman who lives in the apartment told police she awakened to the sound of an intruder breaking through her living room window. She said she awakened her son, and the two of them fled to the bathroom, where they locked themselves in. The woman told police she could hear the man inside her apartment throwing and breaking things before he tried to break down the bathroom door.

Officers arrived at the scene just as the intruder was attempting to leave the apartment through the front door. Police said the man instructed officers to kill him, then retreated back into the apartment, where he locked himself in a bedroom.

The man later tried to flee through a bedroom window, but police were waiting and arrested him on suspicion of first-degree burglary and second-degree assault.
