Mauia, Esera safe for now as Dolphins trim roster

Advertiser Staff

Former University of Hawaii players Reagan Mauia and Tala Esera of the Miami Dolphins are safe, for now.

The Dolphins trimmed their roster to 76 players Monday, a day before the NFL-mandated cut to 75.

However, despite having 76 players on their roster, the Dolphins are currently at the league maximum. Wide receiver Marvin Allen, who was allocated to Miami from NFL Europa, does not count against the team's roster total. Allen is not eligible for the active roster and must remain on the practice squad during the regular season.

"We found out recently ourselves that he does not count," Cameron said on the team's Web site. "It is kind of like an early Christmas present."

Mauia, a blocking back drafted in the sixth-round draft pick, and Esera, a guard, are battling for eight to 12 spots on the roster, according to Cameron.

Another former UH player on the Dolphins is Samson Satele, who was drafted in the second-round draft and has been the team's starting center.

Miami must get down to a 53-man roster by Sunday.
